THEATRES IN CHINA TO CEASE HIRING PERFORMERS CONNECTED WITH DRUGS

BEIJING Performing arts associations in Beijing have pledged not to hire any actor connected with drugs, state media reported on Thursday, after an actor became the latest Chinese celebrity detained in one of China's sternest crackdowns on illegal drug use in two decades. Gao Hu (40) who had a small part as a soldier in Zhang Yimou's 2011 movie The Flowers of War, was detained by police for possession and use of marijuana and methamphetamine, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Beijing police also announced the Tuesday detention in a brief statement.

HUNT FOR 270-TONNE BELL LYING IN MYANMAR RIVER SINCE 1600S BEGINS
YANGON Divers hooked to safety ropes have plunged into waters south of Myanmar's old capital as part of renewed efforts to retrieve a bronze bell that has been lying for centuries at the confluence of three rivers. The 270- tonne bell, believed to be one of the largest ever cast, was made on the order of King Dhammazedi in 1476 and donated to the revered Shwedagon pagoda. In the early 1600s, it was stolen by Portuguese despot Philip de Brito, but his rickety vessel sank where the Yangon and Bago rivers meet the Pazundaung creek.

Over 70 divers were taking part in the latest mission, said Win Myint, the 52-year-old expedition organiser. The project would last up to 45 days and would cost about $200,000, that has come through donations.

HACKERS TWEET RESIGNATION OF RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER
MOSCOW Hackers broke into Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's Twitter account on Thursday, tweeting his resignation and criticising President Vladimir Putin. "I'm resigning. I'm ashamed of the government's actions. Forgive me," said Medvedev's Russian-language Twitter account.
"I've wanted to say this for a long time: Vova you're wrong!" said another tweet, using the nickname for Vladimir. Medvedev, even when he served as president, was considered the second fiddle to Putin. Meanwhile, a massive Russian "humanitarian" convoy closed in on Ukraine's border as fighting rocked rebel strongholds.
OZ HOSPITAL ACCIDENTALLY LISTS 200 PATIENTS DEAD
SYDNEY An Australian hospital apologised on Thursday after mistakenly sending out death notices for 200 of its —very much alive — patients. Austin Hospital, in Melbourne, erroneously killed off the patients when it faxed death notices to their family doctors.
The notices were the result of an inadvertent change to the templates the hospital sends to doctors once a patient has been discharged. Australian Medical Association said the error was unacceptable and potentially distressing to family doctors, while a lawmaker said it was symptomatic of an overworked health system.
